Description

Allophane is an amorphous hydrous silicate of aluminium with variable composition. Here is a red-colored piece of allophane with waxy luster (and surface) and some unidentified inclusions. The red color is likely coused by iron oxydes, allophane itself is colorless.

Comes with very rare (the only one I have ever found) antique Franz Kretschmer (1848-1921) label, dated 19th century. His name is assigned to a major part of the exploration of the sudetes, a mountain range in modern Poland, Czech Republic and eastern Germany, and its mining districts. This sample is from striking distance of the place where he lived.
He made his development for a mining engineer at the mining academy of well known Příbram, Bohemia in Czech Republic.
In 1875, he began as a mining works manager to the "Zöptauer- und Stefanauer Eisenhüttenaktiengesellschaft" (Zöptauer- and Stefanauer iron works public company), where he resided until his retirement in 1908. Kretschmer died in 1921.

I was not able to identify the exact locality, the label means "Quittein bei Möglitz" (Quittein [or so] near Möglitz), but the old german name maybe completely different from the modern czech name of this place.
