Recently I obtained a specimen from Tsumeb without a name. It underwent elemental analysis and turned out to be beudantite.
This case shows that elemental analysis can be very useful. Even if the precision is limited, in the most cases EDS allows to reduce the possible mineral phases to a few. If other characteristics (colour, crystal habit, paragenesis, atomic replacement in structure) are considered, a phase can be very often matched easily.
