Description

This spelethem is a "drapery" of tan- to honey-coloured calcite found in the remains of a tufa outcrop on the banks of the Nith River. Both of the stalactite terminations are intact.

The formation was torn apart during the spring runoff in 2008 and a great mass of the tufa was carried away. Several cavities at the interface of a calcite-cemented conglomerate unit and the tufa unit were revealed.

The pieces we found were broken off and lying in the rubble at the base of the damaged tufa outcrop.

The calcite fluoresces strong, pale yellow in long wave ultra violet light, and also phosphoresces.
