Description

Hokutolite is a rare Plumboan variety of Baryte, deposited by very acidic hot springs water. the Lead/Barium contains range from 1:4 to 1:2, it contains also a very small amount of Radium minerals and is therefor radioaktive, although in old samples the radioaktivity has almost disappeared. The white layer's are a result of the temperature change during the cold winters of the Tohoku region in Japan, while in the suptropical Taiwan (Type locality) such white layers are not observed. In Japan Hokutolite is highly valued, these days it's a designated Special Natural Monument and therefore illegal to collect or remove. This specimen comes from an quite old collection.
