An extraordinary, 19th century example of galena from this historic German locale. This specimen hosts a showy display of sharp, lustrous, highly complex galena prominently perched on a quartz matrix. The galena crystals exhibit a complex morphology that is as fascinating as it is attractive. The crystal size reaches up to 1 centimetre. This specimen retains an OLD 19th century label (believed to be in the hand of Johann Jacob Schmidt (1784-1855) that provides some detailed information in "OLD GERMAN". The label was quite difficult to get translated because it is in Old German - however it goes on to describe the greywacke matrix and also notes association with chalcopyrite, baryite, and calcite - at first glance the other species seem to be missing, however upon close inspection with a loupe or scope one can fine some massive baryite and scattered areas of brassy metallic chalcopyrite/pyrite scattered amongst the galena crystals as well. The specimen retains an affixed label that also matches the written label in detail. The label matches known handwriting from Johann Schmidt of the noted Schmidt family (well worth reading about in the Mineralogical Record Biographical archive) who founded the Fichtelgebirge Museum among many other noted accomplishments. This specimen is from the collection of Kay Robertson and retains her original label as well. This specimen is in fantastic condition and displays gorgeously in person.
