Description

A well formed hippurites completely fossilized in microcrystalline calcite. It shows a curved conical structure with nice growing striations and hollow interior. Hippurites were Rudists, a group of extinct marine heterodont bivalves belonging to the order Hippuritida that arose during the Late Jurassic and became so diverse during the Cretaceous that they were major reef-building organisms in the Tethys Ocean, until their complete extinction at the end of the Cretaceous.

I collected this superb specimen near the locality of Castrojimeno (Segovia) during a cartographical work of Cretaceous rocks in November/1995. It has been since then in my collection.
